Give Them Shelter

Provide indoor comfort in the great outdoors with shelters and structures that succeed in both form and function

By Elisa Kronish

The days of plain outdoor protection are in the past. Park users today are more diverse and more demanding. Where a ho-hum covered cement floor with picnic tables lined up in rows might have been acceptable before, now there are three-tiered, vented structures with decorative lattice work, lighting systems and weather vanes. These days, there's a lot of thought that goes into gazebos, picnic shelters and restrooms.

How do you decide the type of structure that's right for your facility? You need to consider the three Fs: Form, Function and Frills. It's a good idea to know what your options are before putting your plans in stoneā€”or brick, or metal or whatever material you choose. Which brings us to our first "F."
