A Look at Trends in Camp Facilities

Some 7.7 percent of respondents to this year's Industry Report survey were from camp facilities. This is a disparate audience, which includes private camps, youth camps, campgrounds and RV parks. The largest percentage of respondents from this group reported that they worked for private nonprofit organizations, with 45.5 percent of the response. Another 34 percent said they work for private for-profit organizations, and 19.2 percent worked for public organizations.
A little more than a third (33.5 percent) of respondents from camp facilities were from the Midwest, the largest percentage of respondents in this group. They were followed by those in the Northeast (18.7 percent), the West (18.1 percent) and the South Atlantic (17.4 percent). The smallest percentage of camp respondents were from the South Central region, where 12.3 percent of the camp respondents work.
Respondents from camp facilities were far more likely than those in other industry segments to report that they work in rural areas. Some 64.7 percent of camp respondents said they worked in rural communities. Another 30.1 percent are in suburban communities. Just 5.2 percent work in urban areas, not a surprise, given the nature of these facilities.
More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of camp respondents indicated that they manage just a single facility. Another 18.2 percent manage just two or three facilities. Respondents from camps were among the least likely to report that they operated six or more facilities. Just 7.1 percent operate this many facilities, with only 2.6 percent indicating that they manage 20 facilities or more.
A substantially larger number of camp respondents this year than last reported that they formed partnerships with other organizations. While nearly two-thirds (65.9 percent) of camp respondents in last year's survey said they formed such partnerships, this year that number jumped to 75 percent. The most common partners include nonprofit organizations (50.7 percent), local schools (40.3 percent), local government (30.6 percent) and corporate or local businesses (30.6 percent). More than a quarter also said they partner with state government (27.8 percent) and colleges or universities (27.1 percent).
