A Look at Trends in YMCAs, YWCAs, JCCs and Boys & Girls Clubs
While we refer generally to the facilities covered in this section as "YMCAs," the respondents covered here include YMCAs, as well as YWCAs, Jewish Community Centers (JCCs), and Boys & Girls Clubs. This year, these respondents made up 5 percent of the total response to the Industry Report survey, down slightly from 6.1 percent last year.
YMCA respondents were more likely than the general survey population to be located in the Northeast, Midwest and South Central regions. They were far less likely than others to be found in the West. More than one-third (35 percent) of YMCA respondents were from the Midwest, the largest group. This was followed by the Northeast (20 percent), South Atlantic (17 percent), South Central (16 percent) and West (12 percent).
Respondents working for YMCAs were also more likely than others to be located in suburban communities, while they were slightly less likely than others to be found in urban or rural areas. Nearly half (45 percent) of YMCA respondents said they worked in suburban communities, while nearly a third (31 percent) were in rural areas. Less than one-quarter (24 percent) were in urban areas.
When asked about the primary audience served by their main facility, more than half (51.5 percent) of the respondents in this group said they served all ages. The second largest audience for YMCA respondents was adults age 19 to 64, served by nearly one-quarter (24.8 percent) of these respondents. They were followed by children ages 4 to 12 (18.8 percent), with much smaller percentages naming seniors (3 percent) and teens (2 percent) as their primary audience.
Nearly all (99 percent) of the respondents in this group reported that they form partnerships with others outside their organization. This is up slightly from last year, when 97.8 percent said they formed such partnerships. The most common partnerships were made with local schools (92.1 percent of YMCAs partnered with local schools); nonprofit organizations (80.2 percent); local government (67.3 percent); corporate or local businesses (61.4 percent); and health care and medical facilities (56.4 percent). Also of note, YMCAs were far more likely than any other type of facility to work with the military, with more than one-third (33.7 percent) of YMCAs reporting that they had partnered with the military, compared with just 12.7 percent of all respondents.
