Keep Your Pool Water Safe and Clear

Water clarity is critical to the safety of your swimmers. Clear water is not only a sign that water quality is consistent, but it also helps lifeguards keep an eye on the patrons in your pool.

To ensure consistent water quality and clarity, you must strictly adhere to the maintenance practices that suit your pool and its filtration and chlorination systems. Keep detailed records of everything you do at your pool, including regular maintenance. And finally, if you notice changes in your pool water, address the problem immediately. Especially during peak times, it doesn't take long for a minor issue to develop into a big problem.

Q: How do we know there's a problem with the water in our pool?

A: Pay attention to the water in your pool, and you should quickly be aware of problems when they occur. If the water is cloudy or you see signs of algae, you likely have chlorination problems.

Before it gets to this point, you might notice you're having a hard time maintaining a chlorine residual. If you have to put more and more chlorine in your pool, you have a problem, possibly caused by sources of organic material in the water, such as sweat or urine.

If your regular maintenance and checking shows that you have a high combined chlorine level, that also indicates trouble. Combined chlorine, also known as chloramines, requires the pool to be shocked, which means you'll have to temporarily shut down.

The best thing to do is prevent such problems before they occur. Make sure you follow the recommended best practices for your pool and be sure you're relying on systems that fit your pool's needs and maintain high-quality water.

Q: What can we do to prevent problems with our pool's water?

A: A comprehensive water maintenance solution designed for a commercial pool that uses chlorination or bromination as a primary sanitation method will help keep things in working order. This type of system is made of a variety of components, including feeders and controllers that help keep things running well. Talk with manufacturers about the size and bather load of your pool, your needs and demands, and they will help you target the perfect system for your situation.

Be sure to educate yourself and your facility employees about how to use the system, including following recommendations for water balance, sanitizer residuals, shocking and other routine maintenance tasks that will help keep your pool water safe and clear.

A blend of coagulants and clarifiers can also be added to work in conjunction with your pool's filtration to remove undesirable compounds.

Q: What else should we know?

A: All pools require regular maintenance, and you must follow certain steps to ensure your pool's water is clear and healthy for swimmers. Be sure to vacuum the surface of your pool at regular intervals and keep things clean. Talk to your manufacturer about regular maintenance procedures for the various systems that work to disinfect and clarify your water.

Don't forget the importance of properly testing your water on a regular basis. Ideally, you'll be testing the water at least once every couple of hours, but local health departments usually have regulations that will let you know how often you need to test your pool's water. Be sure to keep a written record of the test results. This will help you stay on top of developing problems, and will give you a record to fall back on should any issues occur.

Ultimately, your water will reveal how well your various systems are working. A combination of chemical feeders, controllers and filters, mixed with the right maintenance practices, will make for a safe and pleasurable swimming experience.
