Boost Aquatic Exercise Programs

Patrons are likely already using your swimming pool for exercise—whether it's lap swimming or engaging in other programming. Exercising in the water provides a great outlet for patrons of all ages and abilities. But when you add ways for them to boost their activity even more, you're sure to make the most use of your pool. From aqua-aerobics to therapeutic programs, you can make a big difference in people's quality of life.

Q: We provide times for lap swim, as well as some group aquatic aerobics classes, but would like to expand the options for patrons. What should we consider?

A: You can expand your options even further with aquatic exercise equipment. You can find treadmills, stationary bikes and even elliptical trainers that are meant to be used in the water.

Using such equipment for just 30 minutes can provide a high-performance workout, allowing patrons to burn a significant number of calories. Even better, they'll be getting a good workout without the pounding to their joints that comes with exercising on dry land. And, the resistance of the water provides a powerful boost to their training sessions.

Q: We've been incorporating more and more aquatic programming for our patrons. Many have been asking us about aquatic therapy programs. How can we begin to incorporate aquatic therapy into our facility?

A: First of all, you'll want to be sure to hire instructors who are experienced in providing aquatic therapy in the water. Then, look for the equipment that will enable them to do their job.

You can find a water treadmill designed specifically for professional rehabilitation. It includes interchangeable side rails, allowing you to move the rails to the front or the sides, depending on the client's needs.

Q: What else should we know?

A: Look for equipment that is designed to work well in your type of facility. You can find aquatic bikes and treadmills designed to work in pools that are 3.5 feet to 5 feet deep.

It's also useful to find equipment that is easy to get into and out of the pool. Look for products that fold easily and can be removed from the pool to storage and brought back out when they're needed.

Be sure the products feature anti-corrosion protection and watertight bearings to protect them from your pool's water.
