Ensure Water Clarity at Your Pool

Water clarity is critically important to aquatic facilities. Clear water is a sign of good water quality, and also is crucial to swimmer safety, providing a clear view for lifeguards. Maintaining consistent water quality and clarity requires strict adherence to the suggested maintenance practices for your pool, including filtration and chlorination systems. Regularly checking your pool's water and keeping accurate records is a requirement in most localities. By continually checking the status of your pool, you'll be aware of any changes that require immediate attention.

Q: What can we do to maintain water clarity and prevent problems with the water in our pool?

A: Look for a comprehensive water maintenance solution that is designed to meet your pool's needs and that uses either chlorination or bromination as a primary sanitation method. Working with feeders and controllers, these kinds of systems maintain the status quo by continually adjusting to the changing conditions of your pool. Talk with your manufacturer about your pool's specific needs, from the size of the pool to the number of people using it, and you'll get a system tailored to perfectly suit your needs.

It's also very important to provide training—for yourself and your staff—about how the system works, along with the recommended practices for maintaining water balance and sanitizer residuals. Part of this training should include education on all the routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep your pool water safe and clear.

Blends of clarifiers and coagulants can be used for problem solving. They are also quickly becoming an effective routine maintenance tool. Consider using these products to reduce sanitizer consumption and to help remove undesirable compounds before they accumulate to create problems.

Q: How can we tell if there's trouble brewing in our pool's water?

A: First, be sure you're following all the required preventive steps to keep problems from occurring in the first place. Follow the recommended best practices for your pool, using systems designed for your pool's unique situation. In addition, be sure to regularly test and check the pool's water so you're aware of problems as they develop,

One sure sign of a problem is when you have trouble maintaining a chlorine residual and have to add more and more chlorine to your pool. This often occurs when there are sources of organic material in the water, such as sweat or urine. If the water is cloudy, you probably have a filtration issue. If there's algae, you probably have chlorination issues.

If during your regular testing you discover that your pool has a high combined chlorine level, you'll have to address the problem immediately. Combined chlorine, or chloramines, will require you to shut your pool down temporarily and shock it.

Q: What other issues should we know about?

A: Be aware of regular maintenance requirements. You need to vacuum and brush the pool's surfaces regularly. In addition, your filtration and sanitization systems will require regular maintenance. Talk to your manufacturer to be sure you are performing routine maintenance correctly.

Be vigilant about testing the water regularly. Check with your local health department to determine what the regulations in your area require in terms of how often you must test the water. Ideally, you'll be testing the water once every couple of hours. During periods of heavier use, you'll need to adjust your schedule and test your water more often. Keep written records of all test results, as well as marking off when regular maintenance takes place.

By paying close attention to any changes in your pool's water, you'll know whether your systems are working correctly.
