Heavy-Duty Fixtures

Sports arenas can be rowdy—and fans can put a lot of wear and tear on fixtures in restrooms and other items within the facility. Selecting the right materials can make all the difference, as seen at the KFC Yum Center in Louisville, Ky.

This brand-new, $258 million, 722,000-square-foot arena seats 22,500 and replaces the Freedom Hall built near the Kentucky Fairgrounds in the 1960s. Located on the Ohio River, the KFC Yum! Center is home to the University of Louisville men's and women's basketball teams, as well as ice shows, circus performances and concerts. The center's design features contemporary, clean lines.

These aesthetics needed to be echoed in the centers' restrooms, according to Jason Slone of Atlas Co., which supplied the restrooms' high-density polyethylene partitions.

"The architects and arena owners went with the Black EX product, a sleek black color with a modern texture," Slone said. "he Hiny Hiders partitions resist bacteria, are easy to keep clean and are very impact- and sports-fan-resistant."

Atlas Co. provided bathroom partitions for nearly 300 stalls, along with some supplemental metal.

Tracy Tapp, an associate and interior designer at Populous, the Kansas City, Mo.-based architectural firm that designed the stadium, said the center is her proudest achievement in her 13-year career, adding that materials were a key in achieving her design vision.

"From a design perspective, we were excited to find the solid HDPE partitions with a sporty yet sophisticated texture—and the black color is classic and timeless," she said. The contemporary design of such a facility, Tapp added, must carry through all of its spaces, without losing the color scheme or upscale feel.

At the same time, things like toilet partitions have to withstand a lot of wear and tear in such a facility. According to Ted Nicholson, general manager of the KFC Yum! Center, there have been no dents and no rust in any of the bathroom stalls.
