Challenge!

Every recreation, sports and fitness facility faces daily operational challenges, as well as long-term challenges. How you deal with those challenges on a day-to-day basis can make all the difference between a successful facility that achieves its goals and serves its patrons or a facility that falls short of its mission.

This month, Recreation Management brings you the Problem Solver Idea Book, which aims to answer some of the tough questions faced by managers of all types of facilities, from pools and waterparks to playgrounds, sports fields, parks and more.

Maybe your challenge is covered here, and you can find answers you were looking for. Or maybe your challenges go beyond the pages of this book. Either way, don't put your head in the sand. Ignoring minor problems now only creates major problems down the road.

The best thing to do—whether you're facing one small challenge or a whole series of bigger difficulties—is to break the thing down into bite-sized chunks. If you're faced with a challenge and you don't know how to get started tackling it, take a look at how you can make it smaller.

Once you've done that, you can create an action plan and get to work. In fact, you can do just one thing today to make things easier on yourself tomorrow.

All challenges—major or minor—can usually be solved. It's just a matter of persistence, patience and getting the job done.
