Find the Right Site for Restrooms

Adding restroom structures to your site can go a long way toward providing patron comfort. But, it's important to consider the exact location where you will place your structure. The type of structure you choose—vault or plumbed—will have an impact, but there are many other factors to consider as well.

Q: We are planning to add a restroom structure to our park, but are concerned about finding the perfect location. What should we consider?

A: There is a wide variety of restroom structures available that can meet the needs and constraints of just about any kind of site. One of the first things to consider is which type of structure you will purchase. Do you want a restroom with plumbing and electricity? Then your site needs access to power and running water.

If your site is more remote or your budget will prevent you from extending power and water to the restroom, you might want to consider a waterless vault evaporator system. With no running water needed, these systems reduce waste naturally. They use solar power to run light and the ventilator that keeps the restroom smelling clean.

Q: We've decided to go with a vault restroom structure for our site. What should we know before we purchase and install our restroom?

A: The first thing you need to consider is the number of people using your facility. You want to be sure you purchase a restroom that can handle your site's traffic. If you go with a smaller vault restroom than required, it will increase the maintenance requirements for your restroom and you'll have to have the facility pumped out more often.

You also must consider the proximity of housing to your restroom structure. Whether it's along a trail, on a golf course or in a park, if your restroom is too close to nearby homes, a change in the wind might create complaints of bad odors. Once again, sizing your restroom correctly and choosing a waterless vault evaporator will help keep the air clear. Be sure to talk with your manufacturer about the best choices for sizing your restroom properly.
