Create a Unique Playground

When building new playgrounds, many communities are trying to find ways to create a space that is imaginative and unique, offering a destination for local families and visitors alike. Creating a play destination might seem like a challenging undertaking, but it doesn't have to be difficult. If you select a manufacturer committed to research and best practices in play design, you can create a theme and customized elements that will turn your play space into an engaging destination for people of all ages and abilities.

Q: We're interested in adding a playground with a unique design, but we're not sure how to get started. What should we consider?

A: Unique design elevates an ordinary playground from run-of-the-mill to a buzzworthy play destination.

What's more, you don't necessarily need to start from scratch. Playground manufacturers know that unique designs make for popular playgrounds and offer a wide variety of customizable play elements.

Before you get started on your playground, consider getting input from your community. What makes your community unique? What do community members want to see in a playground? There are many ways to connect your playground with a specific theme that will resonate with your community. Is there something unique about your history or cultural heritage? What about your geology or the ecology of the surrounding area?

Q: We've decided on a theme for our play space, but we're not sure how to make it happen. How do we make our dream playground a reality?

A: There are many different routes you can take when you're beginning to implement your playground inspiration. You might start with a standard playground, and then customize some design elements to help make it your own. Concrete play elements, for example, can be formed in unique shapes, textures and colors to suit your design, like animals or rock formations.

Also consider incorporating digital signage, shade, surfacing and color to extend your design throughout the play space. Talk to your manufacturer about how to use color, photos and logos to make your space unique.

Q: What else should we consider?

A: There are ways to design your playground and the space around it to attract people of all ages and abilities.

In addition to design elements, you should also consider inclusiveness. Adhering to ADA guidelines is important, but you should go beyond the basics of accessibility to create a playground where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy your space together. Consider children and caregivers with limited mobility, as well as those with sensory deficits and developmental challenges. Your playground design team will not only help you create a unique space, they can ensure it includes everyone.

In addition, consider adding other amenities around your playground that invite caregivers to get active, too. Outdoor fitness equipment will be a welcome addition for parents and others who want to squeeze in a workout.
