Provide Shade at the Pool

By providing shade at the pool, you can increase patron comfort and safety, giving people a place to cool down and get out of the sun.

Q: We would like to provide shade to help swimmers get out of the sun. What should we look for?

A: Fabric shade structures are an economical, attractive and durable choice that can help keep the air beneath cool. They are available in many shapes, sizes and colors, so you'll be able to find an option that suits your needs. Fabric umbrellas, sails and other options can screen out up to 99 percent of UV rays, protecting your patrons from the sun's harmful rays.

Q: We want to add shade at our facility to seating areas. What should we look for?

A: For a simple option that limits obstacles on the pool deck, you could install an umbrella with a single center support post. These are available in diameters up to 25 feet, creating 1,500 square feet of shade with a single support.

If you want to keep the support columns out of the way, look for a cantilever design, which features support columns only on the back side of the canopy to leave the front and two sides obstacle-free. This will keep columns away from the edge of the pool, improving safety.

You also can choose options that are moveable, such as collapsible umbrellas with a 14-foot canopy and offset support post. Their portability will give you the ability to move shade where its needed, and you won't incur the expense of installing a concrete footing.

Q: Is there a way to protect swimmers when they're in the water?

A: In addition to encouraging patrons to use sunscreen, you can consider installing a shade solution that covers the pool itself. Since water reflects the sun's UV rays, being in the water poses even more of a sunburn risk to swimmers than just sitting by the pool. Because of this, a shade that covers at least some portion of your pool can provide a high level of protection.
