Swimming Toward Wellness

There's no doubt about it: If you can turn exercise into fun, you're two steps closer to finding exercise that will last for the long haul. And if aquatic facilities provide anything to the visitors who come to splash about, swim and work out, it's fun. Water is just one of many paths to wellness, but it's a powerful one.

In this special supplement to Recreation Management, we're taking a look at how you can use your aquatic facilities not only to improve your bottom line, but to improve people's health.

We start off with a look at how to plan and design aquatic facilities in order to ensure their profitability, or at least keep them operating in the black. From there, we turn to water and air quality, crucial factors in ensuring the health of both your swimmers and your staff. Finally, we turn the spotlight onto programming, with a focus on programming for wellness, which includes not only aquatic aerobics and other forms of exercise in the water, but also expanding to provide aquatic therapy to community members in need.

From small improvements that expand your capabilities to systems that keep the air free of chloramines, from new ideas in aquatic therapy to new ways to prevent RWIs, you'll find plenty of ideas here to keep your facility—and your visitors—swimming toward wellness.
