All Together Now
More than 60 million people in the United States are completely inactive. It's not just that they're not active enough. They're not active at all. This is according to a recent study from the Physical Activity Council. In light of the knowledge that our nation faces chronic problems with obesity and overweight, and the fact that these problems cost millions in lost productivity, chronic illness and other side effects, it's good to know that someone's trying to do something about it.
Who? Well, you, of course.
This is one of the threads that unites the disparate readership of Recreation Management magazine. You all might not have playgrounds. You all might not have pools. You all might not have fitness equipment, sports fields or hiking trails. But there is one thing all of you do have. And that's a commitment to the communities you serve. A commitment to help people get up off of the couch and find a way to move, to socialize and to have some fun.
It's one of the things that strikes me every year as I sift through the numbers that make up this, our Annual State of the Industry Report. No matter what market you serve, no matter what types of facilities you have, and no matter what kind of programming you offer, your facilities are generally not places where people go to sit still.
No, your facilities are places where people go to have fun, to recreate, to engage in a good workout, to play sports, and much more. And for those of us who take advantage of the services you offer, that means something, whether we realize it (and support it with our dollars and voices) or not.
So before you turn the page and start to read about all the ways you differ from the more than 2,000 professionals who filled out our Industry Report survey this year, I'd like to invite you to take a moment to think about all the ways you might be the same. And I'd also like to say thank you. Thank you to those who took the time to respond to our survey. And thank you for providing the facilities, services and programs that help get people moving, interacting, playing, swimming, competing and more.
