The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is partnering with Pool Safely, a national public education campaign from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), to promote the importance of water safety at park and recreation facilities nationwide. As a partner with this campaign, NRPA encourages park and recreation professionals, along with parents, caregivers and children, to take the Pool Safely Pledge, a call-to-action for adults and kids everywhere to commit to taking certain steps to be safe in the water.

As part of a study done this year, the CPSC found that drowning is still the leading cause of unintentional deaths among children ages 1 to 4, and the second leading cause in children ages 5 to 14. According to 2018 CPSC data, approximately 350 children tragically drown in pools and spas annually. The number of drowning accidents reported annually remains constant year over year, showing that fatal and nonfatal child incidents in pools and spas continue to pose a public health risk across the United States. Annually, 73 percent of the hospital emergency room-treated nonfatal drowning injuries from 2015 through 2017 involved children younger than 5. And approximately 54 percent of nonfatal and 84 percent of fatal incidents occurred at residential pools.

"These incidents are preventable. As a mother, grandmother and registered nurse, I raised my kids, and now my grandkids, with a respect for water. Swimming should be a fun way for families to be active, as long as everyone knows how to pool safely," said CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle

The Pool Safely pledge is for both children and adults, with specific requirements and commitments for each. Children who take the pledge promise to never swim alone, to ask their parents for swim lessons, and to stay away from the drains in pools and hot tubs. Adults and parents promise to designate a supervisor when children are in the pool, make sure their children know how to swim, learn CPR, remove portable pool ladders when not in use, and ensure pools are properly fenced in and that drains are covered.

More than 75,000 adults and children, including 14 Olympians, have taken the Pledge to date. To take the Pledge, visit www.poolsafely.gov/Pledge.

"NRPA is proud to join CPSC and so many other influential organizations in promoting the Pool Safely campaign," said Barbara Tulipane, CAE, NRPA president and CEO. "Our organization is committed to bringing awareness to the importance of water safety and the Pool Safely Pledge at park and recreation facilities across the country."
