High School Sports Participation Up, Nearing 8 Million

For the 28th straight year, there has been increased participation in high school sports, now nearing the 8 million mark, according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Based on figures from the 51 NFHS member state high school associations, which includes the District of Columbia, the number of participants in high school sports reached an all-time high of 7,963,535. The increase of 94,635 participants from 2015-16 is the largest one-year jump in overall participation since the 2008-09 school year.

Sports Fields for Schools & School Districts

Programs at Schools & School Districts

The most common program currently offered among respondents from schools and school districts to our annual Industry Report survey was youth sports teams. Some 82.1 percent of school respondents said they have youth sports teams in 2017, up from 78.3 percent in 2016. Other popular program types currently offered include educational programs, fitness, sports tournaments and races, holidays and other special events, performing arts, day camps and summer camps, arts and crafts, individual sports activities like running clubs, and swimming programs.

Looking forward, 18.6 percent of school respondents said they are planning to add programs at their facilities over the next three years, up from 15.8 percent who had such plans in 2016. The top planned program additions include: fitness, educational programs, holidays and other special events, youth sports teams, mind-body balance programs, individual sports activities, day camps and summer camps, special needs programs, arts and crafts, and sports tournaments and races.
