With schools putting the crunch on recess, gym classes and extra-curricular sports, and with out-of-school time dominated by screens and television, the American Academy of Pediatrics is emphasizing the value of play to help children reduce stress, build relationships and more. A new clinical report, "The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children" includes new information linking play and learning.

NRPA Report Shows Americans Agree: Everyone Deserves Access to Great Parks

Playground Plans, 2014 to 2018

Over the past five years, the percentage of respondents to the Industry Report survey who include playgrounds among their planned additions has fallen slightly.

Among all respondents with plans to make additions at their facilities, 16.5 percent in 2014 said they would be adding playgrounds. After an increase to 17.2 percent in 2015, that number has fallen slightly, to 15.2 percent in 2018.

In 2014, 22.2 percent of park respondents who had plans for any additions said they would be adding playgrounds. After a slight increase to 22.4 percent in 2015, that number has fallen gradually, down to 16.4 percent in 2018.

Among respondents from schools who have plans for additions at their facilities, on the other hand, the percentage who will be adding playgrounds has actually increased slightly between 2014 and 2018, from 11.1 percent to 12 percent.
