Guide Aims to Help Gyms Implement Diabetes Prevention

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) recently released the "How Your Club Can Leverage New Diabetes Prevention Program" briefing paper to help fitness centers understand and implement the CDC's Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). Diabetes continues to be a growing problem in the United States and it ranked as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States for 2015.

Nutrition & Diet Counseling Programs

Nutrition & Diet Counseling Programs

In 2018, 18.3 percent of all respondents to the Industry Report survey said they currently provide nutrition and diet counseling programs at their facilities. These programs were most popular among respondents from health clubs (63.1 percent offered such programs), and Ys (53.1 percent). More than one-fifth of respondents from colleges and universities (25.8 percent) and from recreation centers (20.6 percent) also said they were currently providing nutrition and diet counseling programs in 2018.

Looking forward, 15.7 percent of respondents who said they had plans to add programs at their facilities within the next three years said they would be adding nutrition and diet counseling. Respondents from health clubs were the most likely to have such plans (40 percent). They were followed by Ys (34.6 percent) and colleges and universities (28.6 percent).
