IHRSA: One in Five Americans Belong to at Least One Health Club

Later this year, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) will release the 2019 IHRSA Global Report, which provides an overview of the worldwide health club industry, and the 2019 IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report. Since IHRSA began tracking health club utilization in 1987, the reports have shown that health clubs are playing an increasing role in helping consumers stay active, lead healthier lives, and pursue fitness and sport goals.

City Parks Alliance to Host ParkXChange City Workshops

City Parks Alliance announced that ParkXChange City Workshops will be held in Baltimore, Md., Brownsville, Texas, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Washington, D.C., over the next 18 months. The geographically diverse cities share a common goal of strengthening cross-sector partnerships to maximize the benefits of park and recreation resources for low-income communities.

American Board of Obesity Medicine Announces Growth in Board-Certified Doctors

The American Board of Obesity Medicine announced that more than 720 physicians passed its board certification test administered in February, continuing to establish obesity medicine as one of the fastest-growing fields in medicine.

Health Club Usage, 2016-2019

Health Club Usage, 2016-2019

The percentage of health club respondents who report increasing usage at their facilities was projected to grow from slightly less than half (48.5 percent) in 2017 to 63.3 percent by the end of this year.

From 2015 to 2016, 55.3 percent of health club respondents said usage at their facilities had grown, while 11.8 percent reported a decrease. The year 2017 saw more struggle in terms of usage, with 48.5 percent indicating they'd seen an increase and 16.7 percent reporting a decrease.

When the survey was conducted in early 2018. 56.5 percent of health club respondents said they expected usage at their facilities to increase in 2018, and 63.3 percent projected an increase in 2019.
