Dog Parks Still on the Rise

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) recently released data on the nation's dog parks, revealing that 810 off-leash dog parks exist in the country's 100 largest cities, which represents an increase of 37 parks over 2018. Since 2009, the first year that the survey included dog parks for these cities, their number has increased by 74 percent, or 344 additional dog parks.

Dog Park Growth, 2015 to 2019

Among respondents to the Industry Report survey who work for parks and recreation agencies and districts, the number who include dog parks has grown by 5.9 percentage points over the past five years. In 2015, 32.4 percent of park respondents said they currently include dog parks among their facilities. In 2019, 38.3 percent of park respondents currently included dog parks, representing virtually no change from 2018.

At the same time, the percentage of park respondents with plans to add dog parks has held fairly steady over the past five years. In 2015, 22 percent of park respondents who had plans to make additions at their facilities said they would be adding dog parks. In 2019, 22.4 percent had such plans.
