n the past 10 years, the Columbia Heights neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C., has seen plenty of growth and prosperity. Most recently, a giant shopping and entertainment complex began construction at the heart of the neighborhood, and one of the first tenants to occupy the space is Washington Sports Club.

The tenth Gensler-designed Washington Sports Club to open in the D.C. area, the 35,000-square-foot facility welcomes members with a modern look, open spaces and amenities that will suit both individuals and families alike.

The goal of Gensler's design was to create a health club that acts like a town center, with an open and inviting fitness area surrounded by core program spaces. The reception area serves this goal by providing an inviting yet modern twist and giving the club the feel of a hip gathering place. Beyond the reception desk, club members will find the open fitness area, a four-lane lap pool, a basketball court and three separate studios. One studio features aerobics and conditioning classes such as step workouts, cardio kickbox and dance aerobics. The cycling studio features spinning classes, and the mind/body studio provides a relaxing space for group classes including yoga, Pilates and meditation. Group exercise doesn't stop with the studios, though. Strength and conditioning classes are also held in the facility's swimming pool. Spacious locker rooms with an adjacent sauna room provide a place to get ready for a workout and relax afterward.

Large expanses of glass throughout the club provide members with views from one area into another. And an added bonus of the Columbia Heights location is an impressive view of the cityscape.

For area families looking for a gathering place that will welcome all members, there is a family changing room, childcare, a "Sports Club for Kids" and a party room. Programs for kids provide fun while building an interest in exercise.

This highly anticipated addition to the Columbia Heights area has performed exceedingly well, with the highest number of pre-opening sales in the history of the company. In fact, it is still leading in the number of sales companywide.
