Expand Your Climbing Audience

Finding ways to attract new climbers and keep existing ones coming back is the best way to ensure your climbing facility's success. Whether you have a wall in place already or you're considering building one, you should plan to ensure people keep coming back for more. One way to build an audience of climbers is with an auto belay system.

Q: How can an auto belay system help build the number of people using our climbing wall?

A: With an auto belay system in place, more climbers will be able to use your wall, while reducing your overall costs and the risks to climbers.

Auto belay systems help eliminate barriers to entry for new climbers, which means you'll be able to build an audience from the ground up. First-time participants can simply clip in and get started, instead of having to spend extra time on belayer training and testing. What's more, single climbers will love being able to climb without a partner, allowing them to come whenever their schedule permits.

Experienced climbers appreciate auto belays, which give them the chance to get an intense workout, because they won't have to wait while their partner climbs, as they would with a traditional two-person system.

You'll also be able to expand your programming—including classes and clinics, parties and more—without having to staff up. You can simply place the auto belay devices in the area where your program is running. You'll need fewer staff members to belay and supervise the climbers.

Q: How can an auto belay system reduce our risk?

A: The biggest risk in a climbing facility is falling due to human belayer error. An auto belay device will remove that factor from the equation, reducing your risk.

Q: What should we look for in an auto belay device?

A: Talk to your manufacturer to learn more. Your auto belay should meet the strictest safety standards, and you should ask about how it has performed in safety tests. Look for a reliable system that can accommodate a wide range of weights, including small children. It should have no sacrificial wearing parts, as these are costly to replace.

Your auto belay should also be easy to move around. This way, you'll be able to change the position easily when you want to change up your programming.

Be sure to ask about how to maintain your auto belay. The webbing will occasionally need to be replaced, but otherwise, you'll be able to find a low-maintenance, low-cost solution.
