Maintain Your Synthetic Turf Field

More and more owners are installing synthetic turf fields, which can offer a number of benefits, from reduced maintenance to increased playing time. Properly maintaining the field helps ensure safety, playability, appearance, durability and flexibility.

Q: How can the right maintenance practices and equipment help us maximize the programming potential of our field?

A: One of the biggest advantages of synthetic turf is its flexibility, allowing you to schedule tournaments, games and practices back-to-back, no matter what the weather delivers. You can change quickly from one sport to another, but to do so, you'll need special removable paints and multipurpose equipment to groom, paint and remove field markings.

Q: How should we care for our synthetic turf field to ensure it is safe and lasts for the long term?

A: Several tools and techniques can help ensure your field's performance. Normal grooming practices include sweeping, decompaction, brushing, disinfecting, scrubbing, using magnets to remove metal, eliminating static, conditioning and spraying. Occasionally, infill may need to be added and groomed in. The frequency of each of these activities will depend on weather, usage and the intensity of play, as well as the age, condition and location of your field. Generally, for every 10 to 20 hours of use, a normal grooming will keep your field in good playing condition.

One to three times a year, you'll need to do a deep-clean grooming, with a deeper penetration of the turf to remove dirt and loose fibers, separate and clean the infill and return the infill to the field.

Q: What kind of equipment should we look for to help maintain our field?

A: There's a wide variety of field maintenance equipment available, from walk-behind to riders. Some equipment is designed for a single task, such as deep cleaning. You can maximize your investment by looking for self-propelled equipment that can perform many tasks. Be sure to purchase equipment designed specifically for synthetic surface maintenance.
