Problem Solver Questions & Answers

Provide Health-Conscious Concessions

There is a growing consumer demand for food suppliers to provide healthier choices. You can capitalize on this trend by providing healthier options at your concession venues.

Q: Our concession stand offers a wide range of fun foods, but we're worried about providing options that appeal to health-conscious consumers. What should we do?

A: You might think that health-conscious consumers would avoid the concession stand completely, but this is not the case. Nearly one-third of consumers consider snacks to be an important part of a healthy diet.

While traditional concession foods might not appeal to these more health-focused consumers, they will scan your menu to find healthier alternatives. Give them a few choices, and they'll likely become repeat visitors.

Q: What kinds of food can we easily add to our menu for the health-minded consumer?

A: Look for products that have fewer ingredients and are easy to prepare. For example, you can find a new popcorn for concessions that contains just three simple ingredients: popcorn, oil and salt. You can add further appeal to health-aware consumers by marketing other nutritional benefits of this product: It is whole grain, gluten-free and non-GMO—all important factors for many consumers. And the best thing is, you can make it in the popper you likely already have among your concession equipment.

Adding healthier choices like this will give you a leg up on the competition, and health-conscious consumers will recognize your concession as a provider of healthy choices.
