NRPA Leads Effort to Revitalize North Las Vegas Park

Joe Kneip Park in North Las Vegas, serving more than 4,000 nearby children and families, had fallen on hard times. Established in 1965, the 2.21-acre park provides open space in a community with few other choices when it comes to outdoor recreation, but its shade canopy, restroom and playground had been repeatedly vandalized, its fields were thirsty, its trees needed an arborist and its pergola was falling apart.

Despite its troubles, the community still came out to the park to gather and play. And now, thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and some generous sponsors, Joe Kneip Park has a fresh new face.

The park was revitalized as part of the Parks Build Community project, an ongoing national initiative led by the National Recreation and Park Association to revitalize parks and show how parks and recreation can transform communities.

With hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by a crowdfunding campaign, as well as generous donations from sponsors, Joe Kneip Park now features some of the newest, most innovative park amenities available today, including play and exercise equipment, surfacing, shade structures, a restroom, a splash play area, signs, lighting and more.

The crowdfunding campaign was hosted on NRPA's Fund Your Park platform, and the City of North Las Vegas also contributed significant funding toward the park's revitalization.

"Every year, we are amazed at the transformation made through our Parks Build Community projects, and Joe Kneip Park is no exception," said Barbara Tulipane, NRPA president and CEO. "The renovations made possible through our partners and sponsors aren't just cosmetic, though. This revitalized park has the power to reinvigorate the community—bringing people closer together and creating positive changes in conservation, health and wellness, and social equity."

The reopening of the park was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting event in September 2015, coinciding with the NRPA's Annual Conference in Las Vegas. This is the fifth Parks Build Community project completed in coordination with the annual conference.
