New NRPA Guide Aims to Facilitate Conversations Around Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) released its new Equity Language Guide—a glossary of terms to help park and recreation professionals develop a common language around diversity, equity and inclusion.

The glossary breaks out terms into six categories: diversity, equity and inclusion, race and ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, age, ability, and socioeconomic status. It includes best practices to make writing accessible to people of all abilities. It is a starting point for park and recreation professionals to carry out critical conversations in their communities.

"Equity is at the center of all we do, and we want park and recreation professionals to embrace conversations around equity," said Kristine Stratton, NRPA president and CEO. "Being unsure of which words to use shouldn't be a barrier to these critical moments. This glossary gives professionals a place to start and provides advice on how to approach writing and talking in relation to diversity, equity and inclusion."

The Equity Language Guide joins a suite of diversity, equity and inclusion resources aimed at helping NRPA achieve its vision of a future where the full power of parks and recreation is widely recognized for creating a better life for everyone—no matter their race, ethnicity, ability, age, gender identity or income. Those resources include:

  • Equity in Parks and Recreation: A Historical Perspective
  • Equity Action Plan
  • Elevating Health Equity Through Parks and Recreation: A Framework for Action

The Equity Language Guide is a living document as language is constantly evolving and changing. NRPA will seek feedback on the glossary and update it regularly. People are encouraged to bookmark the Equity Language Guide webpage to ensure they always have access to the latest version.
