According to our 2019 Aquatics Industry Survey, a vast majority (91.1%) of respondents said that they currently have a lifeguard on duty as a way to prevent drownings at their facilities, but there were several other drowning prevention methods employed as well.

Life preservers for less experienced swimmers have become more popular over the past decade, and in fact, more than half (54.2%) of aquatic industry respondents to the survey said they currently use life preservers in this way.

Alarm devices were less common, including safety devices that are worn by swimmers and sound an alarm when submerged (4.9%) as well as video or in-pool systems for monitoring swimmers (4.9%). Another 5.5% said they use an "other" drowning prevention method.

Fewer than 5% of respondents (4.8%) said they use no methods to prevent drownings at their facilities.
