18 Cities Earn Grants for Parks

The National Park Service recently chose projects in 18 cities to get federal funds through its Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) program. The organizations overseeing the projects must at least match their share of the $11.7 million in ORLP grants through private, local and state funding. The ORLP program's mission is to boost outdoor recreation opportunities in areas without enough close-to-home parks, and to promote the development of new or enhanced partnerships to support outdoor recreation in jurisdictions with at least 50,000 people.

Outreach to Underserved & Economically Disadvantaged Populations

Outreach to Underserved & Economically Disadvantaged Populations

Among respondents to Recreation Management's 2019 State of the Industry Report Survey, 41.4% said they currently are engaged in outreach to underserved audiences, while 42.1% said they engage in outreach to economically disadvantaged populations. However, there is a very wide range of involvement in such initiatives depending on the type of organization the respondent was reporting from.

Respondents from Ys were by far the most likely to be engaged in such efforts. Some 87.7% of Y respondents said they are involved in outreach to the economically disadvantaged, while 83.6% are involved in outreach to the underserved.

Respondents from health clubs were the least likely to be involved in such initiatives, with just 16.7% working with economically disadvantaged populations, and 12.5% engaged in outreach to the underserved.

Most other respondents fell somewhere in the middle. Among parks respondents, for example, 45.2% were involved in outreach to underserved communities, and 46.8% were engaged in outreach to economically disadvantaged populations.
