INDUSTRY STATS

Pre-Pandemic, Fitness Facility Memberships Held Steady

Pre-Pandemic, Fitness Facility Memberships Held Steady

According to Recreation Management's State of the Industry Report, health club respondents reported either an increase in memberships or a steady number of memberships from 2018 to 2019. Nearly half (48.6%) said that the number of people using their facilities grew from 2018 to 2019, and 40.5% said there was no change. Another 10.8% said the number of people using their facilities had decreased in this time frame.

Looking forward, health club respondents were largely expecting either steady or increasing usage in 2020, though these numbers will certainly be affected by facility closures due to COVID-19.

Looking further ahead to 2021, nearly two-thirds (65.6%) of health club respondents said they expected to see usage of their facilities increase, while 34.4% were anticipating no change in 2021.
