Study Shows Americans Miss the Gym

A first-of-its-kind national survey recently released by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) asked Americans with gym memberships about their physical and mental state throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The full results from the study, conducted in collaboration with Kelton Global, a Material Company, have been published in "The COVID Era Fitness Consumer," which delves into how Americans feel about the pandemic overall, how the virus has shaped their personal wellness outlooks, their overall comfort levels returning to the gym and more.

Industry Report: Who Has Indoor vs. Outdoor Gyms?

Industry Report: Who Has Indoor vs. Outdoor Gyms?

According to Recreation Management's 2020 State of the Industry Report, nearly half (48.4%) of all respondents currently have an indoor fitness center, while almost a quarter (23.9%) said they currently offer outdoor gyms and other outdoor fitness equipment.

Indoor fitness centers were obviously most prevalent among respondents from health clubs, 89.2% of whom said they have a fitness center. They were followed by colleges (86.8%) and Ys (84.9%). More than half of respondents from schools (65.7%) and rec centers (54.1%) also said they currently have an indoor fitness center.

Outdoor fitness areas, fitness trails and other outdoor fitness equipment was most commonly found in the facilities of parks and recreation respondents. More than one-third (34.5%) of park respondents said they currently provide outdoor gyms. A similar number (34.8%) of park respondents provide indoor fitness centers.
