2020 Voters Approve $3.7 Billion for Parks & Public Lands

According to an analysis by the Trust for Public Land (TPL), voters approved nearly $3.7 billion in new funding for parks, climate resiliency and public lands on election day. As the COVID-19 crisis drove unprecedented increases in visitation to public lands from neighborhood parks to national parks, the 2020 election gave voters in 48 jurisdictions across the country the opportunity to weigh in directly on how outdoor spaces improve their quality of life.

Many Organizations Took Programs Online, Provided Outreach, as COVID-19 Hit

Not only did outdoor parks and recreation areas become a boon to a public itching to get out amidst rising COVID-19 case numbers this year. In addition, parks, recreation organizations and others stepped up to provide crucial services to their members and citizens.

Two-thirds (66.7%) of respondents to Recreation Management's COVID-19 Update Survey in early May said they were providing online fitness and wellness programming as a result of COVID-19. This was by far the most commonly deployed type of program respondents were involved in after the pandemic forced the closure of many facilities.

The second most common program respondents were involved in was addressing food insecurity in their communities. Some 39% of respondents to the Update Survey said they had developed programs to address food insecurity as a result of COVID-19.

More than one-quarter (25.8%) said they were providing educational and other support to out-of-school children, while 11.9% were providing similar outreach and support for college students.

Around one-fifth (20.6%) said they were providing childcare programs for essential workers, and 9% said some of their existing facilities had been converted for healthcare use.
