Online Training Tops 2021 Fitness Trends, Says ACSM

Millions of adults have felt the impact of fitness facility closures due to the pandemic over the past year, and have been forced to find innovative ways to be active. That's why it comes as no shock that more than 4,000 health and fitness professionals surveyed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) named online training as the new top trend in fitness for 2021. Online training moved up 25 spots from its No. 26 ranking in 2020.

Fitness Centers Popular, Outdoor Fitness Growing, Says Industry Report

Fitness Centers Popular, Outdoor Fitness Growing, Says Industry Report

Nearly half of respondents to Recreation Management's State of the Industry Report in 2020 said they currently have fitness centers. Some 48.4% said they currently have a fitness center. Slightly fewer—45.2%—said they currently have exercise studio rooms. Nearly one-quarter (23.9%) said they currently include fitness trails or outdoor fitness areas among their offerings.

Looking forward, respondents were more likely to be planning to add outdoor fitness than other types of fitness amenities. Some 14.7% of those who had plans to add features at their facilities said they would be adding outdoor fitness equipment or fitness trails. Some 11% were planning to add fitness centers, and 8.8% were planning to add exercise studios.
