Grants Invest in Community Trail Projects

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) announced the recipients of its 2021 Trail Grants Program, awarding $145,000 to fill critical trail gaps, with an emphasis on regional and community development goals. The awards included $60,000 in Doppelt Family Trail Development Fund grants, used this year to advance projects that bring forward the vision for the cross-country Great American Rail-Trail, a developing 3,700-mile trails that connects across 12 states, from Washington, D.C., to Washington State.

Big Jump in Number Planning Outdoor Fitness

From 2020 to 2021, the number of respondents to Recreation Management's State of the Industry Survey who said they had plans to add features to their facilities fell by more than 5 percentage points. In 2020, 43.3% of respondents said they had plans to add features to their facilities, while in 2021, 37.1% had such plans.

In spite of this, the number of respondents planning to add fitness trails and outdoor fitness equipment increased, from 14.7% in 2020 to 21.2% in 2021. The number planning bike trails also increased, from 10% to 15.4%, and the number who said they are planning to add walking or hiking trails remained virtually unchanged (14.8% in 2020 vs. 14% in 2021).
