Several dozen of the most influential organizations in the sport and nonprofit sectors have officially endorsed the Children's Bill of Rights in Sports, drafted by the Aspen Institute's Sports & Society Program to create a shared cultural understanding about the right of all youth to play and to develop through sports.

Schools & Colleges Have the Most Sports Fields, Most Likely to Be Planning for Synthetic Fields

According to Recreation Management's 2021 State of the Industry Report Survey, more than half (51.2%) of all respondents currently have natural turf sports fields, while just over a fifth (20.6%) currently have synthetic turf. Natural turf fields are most commonly found at the facilities of respondents from schools (71.1% have natural turf), parks (65.3%) and colleges (61.3%), while synthetic turf is most common for colleges (50.5%), schools (37.7%) and parks (16.7%).

Looking forward, 8.9% of all respondents with plans to make additions at their facilities said they would be adding natural turf, and 13.4% said they would be adding synthetic turf. Respondents from Ys were the most likely to be planning to add natural turf sports fields, with more than one-fifth (20.5%) of Ys with plans for additions indicating they would be adding natural turf. They were followed by colleges (11.1%) and parks (10.5%). Meanwhile, more than one-third (34.8%) of school respondents who will be making additions at their facilities said they would be adding synthetic turf. They were followed by colleges (28.9% and parks (13%).
