$500,000 in Grants Awarded for Water-Inspired Play Spaces

In partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the American Water Charitable Foundation announced the recipients of its 2021 Building Better Communities grant program. The City of Imperial Beach, Calif., and the City of Lexington, Ky., were awarded the grants, which total $500,000, to create equitable community-focused, water-inspired play areas that feature modern, state-of-the-art splash pads to teach children and families the importance of water stewardship and conservation.

Rentals & Fees Are Dominant Funding Source for Facilities

According to Recreation Management's 2021 Industry Report survey, nearly two-thirds of respondents (65%) rely on revenue from facility rentals and private events to fund their facilities and programs. More than six in 10 (61.6%) rely on fees from memberships and admissions to support their facilities, and 38.6% rely on tuition and fees.

Donations are also a common method for funding facilities. More than one third (36.7%) said they rely on funding from private individual donations, while 27% rely on corporate donations. Another 21.8% use nonprofit donations to help fund their facilities.

More than one-third (34.1%) said government grants help fund their facilities, while 25.7% rely on private grants.

Finally, taxes are also commonly used to fund facilities, with 32.3% using municipal taxes, 13% using district taxes, 10.4% using state taxes and 9.4% using federal taxes.
