Industry Report: Social Equity as a Top Concern Grows Nearly 50% in One Year

Rising awareness of social justice issues has had a marked impact on the way respondents to Recreation Management's Industry Report survey consider social equity. The number of respondents who named social equity as a top issue of concern for their facilities grew 49% from 2020 to 2021, with 10% naming it a top concern in 2020 and 14.9% naming it a top concern in 2021. Respondents from camps and Ys saw the greatest uptick in concern for social equity. Among camps, the percentage calling it a top concern grew dramatically, from 5.6% in 2020 to 19.2% in 2021. Among Ys, the percentage grew from 12.9% to 23.7%. Only respondents from schools, health clubs and rec centers saw very little change in the number listing social equity as a top concern for their facilities.
