SFIA Report Reveals Impact of Pandemic on Organized
Team Sports

According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) 2021 U.S. Trends in Team Sports Report, the total number of Americans participating in a team sport dropped by 3.8 million players in 2020. The report, which examines participation and market trends in team sports and features in-depth data analysis of age group participation and more, breaks out the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the team sports landscape.

Youth Sports Programs Most Commonly Planned by Rec Centers, Ys & Parks

Youth sports programs are always among the most commonly offered program opportunities for respondents to Recreation Management's Industry Report survey, and 2021 was no exception. More than half (56%) of all respondents said they currently provide youth sports programs at their facilities. They were led by those from Ys (90.4% of whom provide youth sports opportunities), schools and school districts (77.9%) and parks (73%).

Looking forward, 17.4% of those who plan to make any program additions at their facilities said they will be adding youth sports programs. Rec centers were the most likely to indicate they had such plans. More than a quarter (25.9%) of rec center respondents who will be adding programs at their facilities said they would add youth sports programs. They were followed by Ys (20.5%) and parks (20.4%).
