15 Cities Join Peer Network Seeking to Increase Children's Access to Nature

Recently, 15 cities joined a national peer network with 32 other cities that are working to increase nature access for all children, regardless of race, income or ability. The National League of Cities (NLC) and the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) recently chose 15 additional cities to participate in a peer learning community of practice with the goal of advancing early childhood nature connection strategies.

Study: Teens Should Exercise 20 Minutes a Day for Health

A new study, "Intensity and Duration of Physical Activity and Cardiorespiratory Fitness," in the July 2022 Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that adolescents might need just 20 minutes of vigorous exercise a day to be healthy.

Parks & Camps Lead the Way in Fostering Nature Connections

According to data collected for Recreation Management's 2022 State of the Industry Report, respondents from parks and camps were the most likely to provide programs to connect people with nature, environmental education, and nature centers.

Among all respondents to the survey, some 28.9% said they include programs to connect people with nature, while 17.9% offered environmental education programs, and 10.2% had a nature center. Nearly half (46.4%) of park respondents said they feature programs to connect people with nature, while 25.9% have environmental education programs, and 14.9% have a nature center. And among camps, 40% said they currently have programs to connect people with nature, while 32.3% have environmental education programs, and 27.9% have a nature center. Respondents from schools and health clubs were the least likely to include nature-related programming.
