New Research Demonstrates Power of Sport for People With Disabilities

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in four U.S. adults—61 million Americans—have a disability that affects their major life activities. Of those, 47% of people with a disability ages 18 to 64 reported they get no aerobic physical activity. For many of these Americans, the benefits that physical activity can have on their whole health are not widely understood.

Ys & Schools Lead on Youth Sports

According to Recreation Management's Industry Report survey data from the past three years, the percentage of respondents overall who offer youth sports programming has dropped slightly, from 55.2% in 2020 to 50.3% in 2022. The respondents most likely to provide youth sports programs were from Ys. Some 87.2% of Y respondents in 2022 said they currently provide youth sports programs at their facilities, down from 90.4% in 2021. They were followed by schools, with 82.5% of school respondents in 2022 indicating they currently provide youth sports programs (up from 77.9% in 2021), and parks (70.1% in 2022, down from 73% in 2021).
