WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, National League of Cities (NLC) CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony issued the following statement in response to the Biden Administration’s new National Strategy on Hunger,Nutrition, and Health:
“In cities, towns and villages across our county, local leaders work hard every day to create healthy and thriving economies, from supporting individuals experiencing food insecurity to ensuring that our children have access to
green places to play. We applaud the Administration for crafting a national strategy that addresses the hunger, nutrition and health challenges facing our nation. Local leaders have been working to address these challenges in their communities through innovation and investment and look forward to furthering these goals by partnering with the federal government.”
The strategy includes priorities important to cities, towns and villages including:
- Addressing food insecurity by increasing access to and strengthening federal nutrition programs;
- Incorporating social determinants of health into health care to address the root causes that impact health and health disparities;
- Supporting increased connections to green spaces;
- Supporting increased physical activity for children through the Engage Every Student Initiative, of which NLC is a partner;
- Acknowledging the role that climate change has on food security and the health of our communities; and
- Building the economic security of workers and families in our communities through refundable tax credits like the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.
