Trails, Outdoor Fitness Among Commonly Planned Additions

Nearly half (44.5%) of respondents to the Industry Report survey in 2022 said that they currently include walking andgraph hiking trails at their facilities. This is down from 48.8% in 2021 and 52.9% in 2020. Bike trails were somewhat less common, with 23.6% in 2022 indicating they currently include bike trails, down from 27.4% in 2021 and 30.7% in 2020. Fitness trails and outdoor fitness equipment also saw a decrease, with 18% in 2022 indicating they currently have a fitness trail or outdoor fitness equipment, down from 22% in 2021 and 23.9% in 2020.

Looking forward, however, trails were among the more commonly planned additions in 2022. Some 12.3% of respondents who were planning to add features at their facilities said they were planning to add fitness trails or outdoor fitness equipment. A little less than one in 10 said they would be adding walking and hiking trails (9.5%) or bike trails (9.1%).
