According to the 2023 Industry Report survey, 83.4% of respondents with aquatics have a lifeguard on duty at their facilities.
This is up slightly over the past two years, when the number of aquatic facilities that had a lifeguard on duty fell slightly as the pandemic’s impact on lifeguard training and staffing in general resulted in a struggle to fully staff facilities. In 2022, 81.8% of aquatic respondents had a lifeguard on duty, and in 2021, 81.9% had a lifeguard on duty.
Prior to the pandemic, the percentage was slightly higher, with 85% indicating they had a lifeguard on duty in 2020 and 85.1% in 2019.
