University of Alabama Bryant-Denny Stadium Gets New, High-Tech Turf

At the University of Alabama, there is a “home turf” advantage. And, it’s more than the Crimson Tide’s 100,000+ cheering fans.

University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium recent field surface renovation features a natural grass playing turf, a synthetic turf sideline, and a SubAir Sport System with TurfWatchTM Technology to facilitate rapid water drainage and to push air into the root zone to enable turf growth. This patented control system uses 14 in-ground, wireless sensors that relay subsurface conditions 24/7 to the central control through a secured communications network. The data automatically engages the SubAir Sport System to maintain ideal subsurface conditions.

The SubAir Sport System gives Jon DeWitt, Director of Sports Grounds for the University of Alabama, a significant advantage by controlling the subsurface temperatures and moisture levels in the turf. TurfWatchTM Technology also provides DeWitt remote access to view turf conditions, current operating status, and manually activate equipment from his smartphone or computer.

The University of Alabama’s SubAir Sport System has the additional advantage of Forced Air Heating capabilities to deliver heated air to the root zone to extend grass growing season throughout football season. With advanced moisture removal and subsurface temperature control to moderate early winter temperatures, Bryant-Denny field is better prepared to recover from challenging weather conditions.

With this technology and equipment, Bryant-Denny Stadium has joined the Class of 2022-2023 SubAir Sports field installations including the Denver Broncos’ Empower Field, Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium, Philadelphia Eagles’ Lincoln Field, and the new Buffalo Bills’ Newmarket Stadium. Teams are also improving practice fields with installations for the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Fire FC, and the Dallas Cowboys. Installing later this year is the first National Women’s Soccer League field for the Kansas City Current. 

The ability to maintain ideal growing conditions, extend the growing season and improve turf recovery results in a firmer, healthier playing field and impacts athlete safety, which is a priority for stadium managers. This superior natural grass turf is preferred by athletes.
