Cleveland State University Wins the SportsArt Campus Challenge

SportsArt, the leader in sustainable fitness solutions for over 40 years, is thrilled to announce that Cleveland State University is the grand prize winner in its nationwide Campus Challenge sweepstakes. As such, the CSU recreation center is being awarded SportsArt’s ECO-POWR™ energy-generating premium cardio equipment valued at over $70,000.

The sweepstakes asked college students to say “challenge accepted”, live more sustainably on their campuses and pledge their efforts through a TikTok video, creating a chain reaction of sustainability commitments among college students nationwide.

The randomly selected second place winner is University of Michigan, who will be awarded $43,000 worth of SportsArt innovative ECO-POWR™ equipment. The ECO-POWR™ equipment awarded to the winning schools converts human energy into usable electricity, helping students to reduce their carbon footprint on campus and give back to the electrical grid as they do their regular workout.

“Cleveland State University is excited to partner with Sports Art with the placement of their ECO-POWR™ cardio equipment,” said Nick Froelich, director of University Recreation and Wellbeing at Cleveland State. “The equipment achieves on our department’s strategic priorities by offering physical, environmental and financial wellness opportunities for our students, faculty, staff and surrounding CSU community.”

College students nationwide submitted TikTok posts accepting the challenge to be more sustainable in their campus life to enter the SportsArt Campus Challenge sweepstakes. A summary of each finalist and their submission is below:

Cleveland State University: Laura Garvin pledges to always turn lights off before she leaves a room to reduce electricity consumption.

University of Michigan: Dillon and Chase pledged to recycle every day to reduce the waste that they produce.

"Sustainability is an important initiative on Cleveland State's campus,” said Laura Garvin, winner of the 2024 SportsArt Campus Challenge and graduate supervisor of recreation programming at CSU. “Our University Recreation and Wellbeing team embodies this through environmentally friendly programs and services. SportsArt equipment aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals. We are so excited that SportsArt has given us the opportunity to continue to maintain a sustainable campus!"

Included in the grand prize package is the G690 Verde Treadmill— the first treadmill in the industry to harness human power and convert it into utility grade electricity. Capable of capturing up to 200 Watts/hour of energy, the G690 Verde Treadmill and the rest of the ECO-POWR™ prize package give back to the grid as students work out.

“We are so excited that CSU won the first ever SportsArt Campus Challenge sweepstakes,” said Ruben Mejia, executive vice president, SportsArt Americas. “The pure creativity and passion within the TikTok submissions tells you everything you need to know about college students—that they are going to change the world for the better. With many small gestures, we can make big changes for the good of our planet. With the ECO-POWR™ line of equipment awarded in grand prize package, CSU students will convert up to 74% of human energy produced into clean renewable energy with every workout.”

The finalists were randomly selected from the pool of all qualified entries, and their winning order was selected at the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) 2024 All Conference Social.
