Staffing has been a major challenge for parks and recreation facilities over the past few years. Those challenges are compounded when work is seasonal in nature, such as mowing and painting lines on sports fields. If you’re having a difficult time managing your grounds staff’s workload, autonomous technology can help.
Q. We’ve been challenged with finding enough seasonal staff to handle our sports fields. What should we do?
A. Autonomous technology, like field marking robots, can save time and manpower. When you need to line a field, whether it’s for the first time ever or you simply need to remark a field, you can let an autonomous GPS line marking robot handle the task, freeing up your limited crew to handle other jobs, such as moving goals or cutting the grass.
Field marking robots can manage the markings for more than 50 different types of sports fields quickly and accurately, day or night, in changing weather and even on rough or uneven ground.
Q. How can autonomous technology like field marking robots help?
A. Field marking robots are easily transported. Just one person is needed to get it set up. Once you’re at your field location, turn on the robot and your tablet, which will automatically connect and find a GPS signal. Place your field or fields on the Google Maps interface on the tablet, add line marking paint and your robot will get the job done.
Once you push Start, your robot will mark the entire field. You’ll receive a notification on your tablet when the job is complete, or if the robot runs low on paint. You can save templates so you’ll be able to remark fields again and again.
It takes several people many hours to lay out and mark most fields, and if the fields are not remarked regularly, the lines will disappear, and you’ll have to measure again from scratch. A field marking robot will dramatically reduce the time and labor required. For an American football field, for example, you’ll go from four people working 20 hours to just one person finishing a field in 2.5 hours.
