Extend the Life of Your Pool Cover

Pool covers are an important tool, reducing energy and resource loss from evaporation when pools are not in use. But proper care is required to ensure your pool cover lasts to protect your pool season after season.

Q. What can we do to help extend the life of our pool cover?Medco

A. Always remove the cover completely when the pool is in use. Properly cleaning and storing your pool cover will help ensure it lasts. Start by removing leaves or debris from the surface of the cover. You can also use a hose to rinse debris from the surface. Then, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning your cover.

Next, inspect your pool cover for any signs of wear or tear. Check for fading by comparing the color on the top of your cover to the color on the bottom. That could indicate UV damage. Inspect for rips or tears in the fabric, and look for frayed, missing or broken stitching, frayed or damaged straps, and damaged or broken webbing. Also check for any damaged or broken hardware. If your cover has anti-abrasion strips sewn into the bottom check those for signs of wear or tear. If you see any damage, consult with your local pool professional to see if repairs are recommended.

Finally, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to properly fold your cover, and store your cover in an area free of rodents.

Q. What steps should we take when it comes time to winterize the pool?

A. Keeping your pool covered in winter will help protect your pool, your staff or others in the pool area. While you should never walk on or allow anyone to play on the cover, a safety
pool cover that meets ASTM guidelines for safety is designed to support the weight of a child or an adult.

Keep the cover drum-tight to reduce excessive wear, and add protective padding to any sharp corners or rough areas around the pool to protect your cover from abrasion. Check the cover on a regular basis to ensure it is still drum-tight, and adjust the buckle positions to achieve proper tension if necessary.

When your cover is in use, maintain the water level within 18 inches of the cover. Heavy snows or excess debris can cause the cover to stretch too far if the water level in your pool falls, leading to stress tears or damage to the springs.
