SportsArt Campus Challenge Grand Prize Winner Cleveland State University Awarded Sustainable Fitness Equipment

Cleveland State University’s Campus Recreation Center has an exciting new sustainability effort in place and it is thanks to several of its students who took the opportunity to enter the SportsArt nationwide Campus Challenge sweepstakes.

The Cleveland State University Recreation Center is receiving SportsArt’s innovative ECO-POWR™ premium cardio equipment that converts human energy into usable electricity, including the G690 TreadmillG260 RowerG778 StepperG876 EllipticalG576U Upright CycleG576R Recumbent Cycle and the G516 Indoor Cycle. This human energy converting cardio equipment valued at $70,000, was installed on July 22, 2024 in the Total Body Room, one of the busiest spaces in the campus recreation center.

“We are so excited that Cleveland State University won the first ever SportsArt Campus Challenge sweepstakes,” said Ruben Mejia, executive vice president, SportsArt Americas. “The pure creativity and passion within the TikTok submissions tells you everything you need to know about college students—that they are going to change the world for the better. With many small gestures, we can make big changes for the good of our planet. With the ECO-POWR™ line of equipment awarded in the grand prize package, CSU students will convert up to 74% of human energy produced into clean renewable energy with every workout.”

Combining user-friendly controls, reliable durability and unmatched sustainability—SportsArt’s full line of ECO-POWR™ premium cardio equipment turns campus recreation centers into sustainable fitness solutions. In fact, the G690 Verde Treadmill is the first treadmill in the industry to harness human power and convert it into utility grade electricity and is capable of capturing up to 200 Watts/hour of energy—giving back to the grid as students work out.

Laura Garvin, the CSU student who created the grand prize winning TikTok entry, discussed turning lights off when leaving a room to reduce energy consumption. All students were tasked with accepting the SportsArt challenge to be more sustainable on their individual campuses in order to be entered into the sweepstakes.

"Sustainability is an important initiative on Cleveland State's campus,” said Laura Garvin, who submitted the winning entry in the 2024 SportsArt Campus Challenge and is graduate supervisor of recreation programming at CSU. “Our University Recreation and Wellbeing team embodies this through environmentally friendly programs and services. SportsArt equipment aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals. We are so excited that SportsArt has given us the opportunity to continue to maintain a sustainable campus!"

The Cleveland State University Recreation Center is located at 2420 Chester Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio.
