Outdoor Recreation Economy Delivers $1.2 Trillion Impact

The latest economic data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) measures the outdoor recreation economy for the U.S. at $1.2 trillion, confirming the industry’s crucial role in fostering economic growth, innovation and job creation.

“Outdoor recreation is more than just a pastime enjoyed by over 57% of Americans; it’s a cornerstone of our nation’s economy,” said Kent Ebersole, president of Outdoor Industry Association (OIA). “OIA led the charge in urging the BEA to track this data, which continues to reveal the profound economic and societal value of human-powered outdoor pursuits. These activities fuel local economies, drive innovation, and create healthier, more connected communities. As the voice of the outdoor industry, OIA and its members are committed to advancing policies and investments that sustain this growth while protecting—and growing access to—the benefits of the outdoors for everyone.”

Economic data demonstrating the importance of the outdoor recreation economy include:

  • The outdoor industry supports 5 million U.S. jobs, and accounts for 2.3% of GDP, a testament to its importance in both rural and urban communities.
  • With a record 175.8 million Americans enjoying the outdoors each year, outdoor recreation engages a diverse and growing audience.

This data reinforces the need for strategic investments in the outdoor industry. OIA is advancing a collaborative, bipartisan approach to strengthen the outdoor recreation economy and drive meaningful impact through the following priorities:

  • Advance a Balanced Trade Agenda: OIA is committed to advancing tariff reform, supporting U.S. manufacturing, and leveling the playing field for outdoor businesses. OIA will continue to advocate for the renewal of programs including the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) to reduce costs, create jobs and fuel innovation in outdoor products.
  • Promote Conservation and Expand Access to the Outdoors for All: OIA supports policies that invest in outdoor recreation infrastructure and public lands, along with policies that ensure access to outdoor spaces for all nationwide.
  • Champion Climate and Sustainability Policies: To protect recreation spaces and promote sustainable innovation, OIA endorses climate policies that safeguard sensitive habitats, enhance public lands and support clean infrastructure.

OIA invites the industry to join President Kent Ebersole and its government affairs team on December 5 at 1 p.m. MT for a webinar to dive deeper into the BEA data and discuss the 119th Congress and industry policy priorities for 2025.
