While nearly twice as many respondents to the Industry Report survey said they had natural turf sports fields as opposed to synthetic turf fields, when it comes to plans for the next few years, they were much more likely to be planning to add synthetic turf.
Some 24.4% of all respondents said they currently have synthetic turf fields, while 53% have natural turf fields. For the respondents most likely to have sports fields—those from colleges and universities, and schools and school districts—synthetic turf was far more common than for the survey population at large. Some 58.6% of college respondents and 48.3% of school respondents said they had synthetic turf playing fields, while 56.9% of college respondents and 62.1% of school respondents had natural turf fields.
Looking forward, 17.3% of all respondents with plans to make additions at their facilities said they would be adding synthetic turf, while 10.5% are planning natural turf fields.
