Improve Indoor Air Quality

Air quality can often become a problem for indoor pools, with chlorine odors indicating the presence of chloramines. Formed when the chlorine in the pool reacts to organic compounds like sweat, dirt, and other substances, chloramines can cause health issues for swimmers as well as employees who spend a lot of time in the facility. At the same time, they can also damage and corrode equipment, costing your facility in the long run. Ensuring your facility is free from chloramines is essential to protect your pool’s infrastructure, as well as your staff and swimmers.

New Builds

If you’re building a new pool, you can prevent problems with air quality before they start. Work with a design team including an aquatic designer and mechanical engineer who are experienced with designing indoor pools, and their complicated air handling requirements.

As you work with your design team, ask them to specify a low source-capture system that can collect and evacuate chloramines at the surface of the pool. The system should be as close to the surface of the pool as possible. And since you’re planning for the removal of chloramines up front, you can also talk with your pool’s air-handling design and manufacturing team to coordinate the dehumidification system with the source-capture system and use the exhausted air to help heat the pool, saving costs on pool heating.

Existing Pool Problems

When your existing indoor pool has air quality issues, swimmers and staff will quickly notice, with red, itchy eyes and even respiratory challenges. But you can get on top of the problem with the same low source-capture technology, available in a retrofit system.

Your choice will ultimately depend on your budget, but there are multiple options available. If you’re replacing your deck as part of a larger renovation project, you can look at a gutter and deck drain option. More often, you can take a simpler approach and install either a wall or bench system with an independent fan that allows for the capture and evacuation of the chloramines created in the pool, keeping them from reaching the HVAC returns and being recirculated in your facility.
