Bedford Reinforced Plastics Introduces New FRP Decking Option for Pedestrian Bridges

Bedford Reinforced Plastics is pleased to introduce the new PRODeck LV fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) decking option for pedestrian bridges. The light-duty option is an addition to Bedford’s decking offering, which includes PRODeck H5 heavy-duty and traditional southern yellow pine.

The new PRODeck LV decking is a lightweight, economical option for pedestrian bridges — perfect for parks, greenways, campus walkways and other outdoor spaces where vehicles are prohibited. PRODeck LV combines FRP durability with quick and easy installation. For maximum safety, it features a non-slip surface with anti-skid grit to prevent slips in wet or icy conditions. Finished in green with a gray anti-skid surface, it is designed for long service life and minimal maintenance.

Bedford’s PRODeck H5 heavy-duty decking delivers maximum strength and resilience for demanding applications. Engineered to carry H5 (10,000 lbs.) vehicle loads, the heavy-duty decking is built to withstand harsh environments. PRODeck H5 decking is resistant to rot, rust, corrosion and warping, making it ideal for marine, industrial or extreme weather conditions. The gritted surface improves traction in snow, ice and heavy-use areas. Unlike wood, FRP construction requires minimal maintenance and helps reduce long-term ownership costs.

In addition to FRP decking options, Bedford offers pressure-treated southern yellow pine as a bridge decking option. The material meets ADA guidelines and can be used for pedestrian, equestrian and H5 vehicle bridges. Pine provides a natural feel underfoot that horses are comfortable with, making it a recommended choice for equestrian applications. While versatile, southern yellow pine decking requires periodic maintenance to prevent rot or wear in certain climates. For bridge decking needs in harsher environments, PRODeck options can provide longer-term solutions.

“Every project has unique requirements. Selecting the right bridge decking comes down to balancing cost, safety and longevity with the specific application,” said Eric Kidd, marketing director for Bedford Reinforced Plastics. “Our three options give customers the flexibility to choose the solution that works best for them.”

Bedford offers bridge decking solutions for a variety of applications:

●      PRODeck LV - Light-duty pedestrian traffic. Features slip resistance, fast installation and minimal maintenance.

●      PRODeck H5 - Heavy-duty or harsh environments. Provides maximum load capacity, durability and long service life.

●      Southern Yellow Pine - Standard option for pedestrian and equestrian bridges. Natural feel that requires occasional maintenance.
